Fitted some tyres to rims and went to the local petrol station\garage and the air compressor wouldn't activate\work - do these petrol station\garage compressors work on kart rims\tyres?

The air compressor unit I used (at 2 different garages) was one of those large grey boxes with a digital display where you set the air pressure with + and - buttons.

I'm now thinking that the older type of air compressor where the pressure reading is at the end of the line on the actual unit where you control the flow of air may work instead - not seen one of these for a while at a garage though?

What do you guys do - don't want to get an air compressor unless you know of a decent cheap one for the job
