Just my opinion, however being your/his first season i'd imagine going it alone would be best. If you do so, apart from all the father son time, you can both learn as you go along, enjoy it as he gets faster and faster through the year, then come the end of the year or two years, if you feel you've done all you can to make him faster, then that's when you go to a team. However because you spent that first year or two 'going it alone' you'll have a better understanding of everything the team are playing with to make him faster etc and be able to put in educated ideas of his performance.
Myself at the moment, i'm just a novice and i'm acquiring the help of teams to show me how to set the kart up during practice days - as i cant afford a team to run me due to funding it myself, also i see it being a good laugh for me and my dad, brother etc through the year as you could say its not 'too serious' - and i know how awkward it is for me to even suggest something to them, as i've had sweet FA experience compared to them, but after ive done a year or two racing i'll be able to put forward educated questions based on my own experiences and not just 'what i've heard'.
This is just my opinion, i gather your both relatively new to the sport, so he, like me have lots to learn in kart control and for you kart set-up before the help of a team is going to really make its worth. I know at the moment i'm just getting as much bum in seat time...
Hope this helps, Thomas...................
