Richard is right, it is not the actual S1 weekends where the bills mount up. Although they are expensive enough. My lad did S1 in cadets and minimax. Over those 3 years we raced or practiced 35-40 weekends a year. We did at least 1 club round at each track, usually we tried 2 in case we had a nightmare at one, we still had set up and data. In minimax we had 3 sets of tyres on a super 1 weekend, these were then used for other meetings and practices. Others had replacement chassis every few meetings, we generally had 2 a year, although we also wrote 2 off in crashes.
As many of the S1 drivers take the same approach with club meetings and practice and the calender is kind of restricted, you often find a similar batch of S1 drivers at the same meetings. Hence the S1 mob.
