Ken - it is very difficult to get the right balance between keeping costs down and restricting euipment that can be used.
When it looked as if chassis protectors would be banned there was a lot on this forum suggesting that this would benefit drivers with big chequebooks as they could take the `faster' lines over the kerbs and replace their chassis after the meeting. The less well off would have to avoid the kerbs and therefore bu uncompetitive.
One solution would be to penalise anyone using the kerbs but if everyone was restricted to two chassis for the season or face championship penalty points then they would have to think about chassis damage.
At the moment I am not convinced that cost is a major problem in karting. There is a wide choice of class and plenty of club and special championships to allow most people to enjoy the sport. Unfortunately there are quite a few drivers whose potential talent can't be developed because of the parent's chequebook restriction. Perhaps stories about Lewis being spotted by McClaren as a young age give a false impression that there is masses of sponsorship available to any driver who shows promise?
