I recently upgraded a very old Solo chassis from its 40mm axle to 50mm. The bearing hangers accepted the bigger 50mm bearings and I was fortunate enough to have a box of spares to replace hubs, brake disc and bearings so I didn't spend any money on it.
I did notice though the kart was more flexible and able to take advantage of my lads range of axles. I kart just for fun so I leave the technicalities of 40 v 50 to those more qualified but I personally felt the kart more responsive. When you look at the 40mm axle, the wall thickness is 3mm compared to 2mm on 50mm and its as solid as anything, I now use it for straightening chassis! I wouldn't do that with even the hardest 50mm. So take what you want from this but 40mm axle is going to be as stiff as anything on a smaller raius and 50mm gives you more options in my opinion.
