Your son may be moving forward in the seat at the corners, so the edge of the seat then drive ina and under the rib protector.

If you fit the 'ears', seat extensions marketed by Tillet as Ribcage spacers, the trouble may go away.

I've also seen a seat with a number plate bolted onto that top corner after being bent by a heat gun with a layer of rubber padding. The driver is happy with it, so it is obviously more about locating the driver than in the sheer strength of the addition.
