How does track temperature affect lap times?

How does track temperature affect lap times? I always thought that a warmer track gave quicker lap times, is there a point though that when the track temperature reaches above a certain point it becomes slower? If so what is the scIence behind that? What kind of ambient and track temperatures are the quickest for karting?
