Thanks for the suggestions folks, the laptop I have to use is one that is locked down and I wouldn't be allowed to add my own USB 3-G dongle to it, but I could connect to a Wi-Fi hot-spot, so I might be driven down the Andriod 3g telephone with hotspot route.
My own laptop has built-in 3G and I use the T-Mobile Web-n-Walk Max package with that....hmm, wonder if I could use connection sharing with that....
