It sounds like it's more to do with where the weight is positioned. The weight was probably exactly where the centre of gravity is, by removing the weight you effectively raised the centre of gravity thus affecting the balance of the kart.

It is an interesting idea to add more weight in that area to see if it gives your driver a better balance.
