Is this brand new of secondhand? If brand new then send it back to the supplier. Yes your right by coiling the cable around the HT lead and would put some insulating tape on to secure. If second hand then try a new length of wire and see if it picks up any revs before throwing more money away buying a new temp lead, if still nothing get back in touch with whoever you bought it from and hope their sympathetic
