Whilst AFFF and Dry Powder will both deal with fuel fires I would reccomend the Dry Powder for your awning. The 'Knock Down' rate of dry powder is much faster than AFFF due to the way it works. The way to kill a fire is to remove one of the 3 key elements required for the fire to exist. i.e. Fuel, Heat & Oxygen. The Dry powder works by absorbing the oxygen from the surrounding air whereas the AFFF foam forms a blanket over the fuel to achieve this while also offeing a cooling effect to reduce re ignition However as we are dealing with petrol it is the vapour that burns not the fuel itself so any escaping vapour will still ignite if the blanket is broken.
Having dealt with many motorsport vehicle fires over my years in racing my first attack would always be with Dry Powder, the only exception to this was dealing with a leaking diesel fire ignited by a very hot turbo where the heat was the main enemy igniting the diesel fuel itself.
I have to say I never managed to loose a vehicle to a fire.
BTW I am not unlucky or careless having all these motorsport fires, it was my job as a 'Fast Response' fire crew for the BARC for some 15 years.
Bottom line: Buy a Dry Powder first then when you can afford it by an AFFF as well. On the day the worst happens anything you invest on good fire kit will be some of the best money you ever spend.
