They do it using vacuum metallisation. The helmet is primed and sanded to a very smooth finish (any flaws are very visible). They then spray their own special primer over the top (you are at the mercy of their sprayer as far as this is concerned, it can be very variable!). The helmet is placed in a vacuum chamber and a static charge is applied to it, whilst an aluminium electrode is vaporised in the chamber, settling particles on the helmet. Lastly, they spray it with a one part clear coat. This finish is a devil to work with.
I think this is mostly right.
