I cant comment on how karting used to be as only recently started as grease monkey to son.
Slightly out of the box thought here but karting today goes one of two ways. You either do all maintenance / setup yourself or you run with a team.
Running with a team IS expensive and would put a lot of people off so your left with DIY.
Now here just might be a problem. Go back 30 years (or less) and ask most blokes to strip the engine on their car and they would be able to manage the basics. These days a lot of the younger men (30's or younger) cant even find the bloody dip stick, that assumes they managed to open the bonnet in the first place.
The level of mechanical skill just isn't anywhere near the level it used to be. This may then present a huge barrier for dad getting little jonny in to karting.
My lad summed this up perfectly when he said "It's great having a dad that can fix things, most of my friends dads are useless"
