Hi, The brace is intended to disuade 2 significant injuries othe than whiplash in MX. The first is where the rider is thrown from the bike and hits an object with the top of the helmet. The brace stops the head from being forced into the shoulders and significantly decreases the compression of the neck and also spine which is obviously a painful injury. The second (and prob most important) is where the rider is still attached to the bike and the bike goes over the top of rider. If you can imagine going over a jump and the back end kicks up. This forces the back end to rotate over the front of the bike. The rider lands almost face first and chest parallel to the ground( a face plant). The brace stops both the movement of the chin tucking into the chest and also the reverse action of the back if the head being forced backwards to the back. This drops the mist fearful injury of broken neck and also spinal cord damage. The original Leatt was designed by an Australian doctor and American MX rider(David Bailey) if memory serves who suffered exactly this injury and campaigned for them ever since.
