You should be able to pick up a decent competitive club engine for not too much money or go for a new one as they are apparently pretty good. I doubt if even the Ł15k+ comer engines are giving 1.5 seconds advantage.
What sort of engine/carb problems are you having - how old is the carb? the earlier Trytons were a problem but newer ones seem more reliable.
Honda is obviously a potential answer but where do you race? At many tracks around Oxfordshire you may only get one or two hondas in the cadet grid so be sure that you and son would be happy with that.
