New Driver - Just thinking ?

A few of you may have seen my previous posts but i am wanting to get some kit together for my boy who is 8 in May.
I seem to struggling to get the right kit package and am being helped along by a wonderful guy who i could not ask for more from.
However..........
My boy did his letsgokarting session the other week and is now going on in my ear 24/7 asking when he can go again/where his kart is etc.
Now then, i wonder...is it not possible/sensible for me at this stage to buy a lesser kart for practice, i have no idea what i can or cant use. Can i get an old chassis and s60 engine with the old carb (cant think what its called tillotson i think) or an old honda or whatever which will be cheap and get my boy out at Shenny/WM once or twice a month to have a drive round and get used to the track and kart thereby buying me time to find the right package i need yet still having him not going on in my ear and being able to learn the ropes.
Any input anyone please?
