The Mychron Gold asks how many splits (split times) there are on the track rather than the number of strips there are in the surface of the track.
0 split times means that there is only one strip in the surface 1 split time means that there are two strips in the surface.
Because one is relying on a strip of magnets these are 'hard' splits.
Some systems, PI research for example, has knowledge of where one is on the track and allows the setting of 'soft' split times which can be reset in software.
Theoretically, if you download your hard split times to a database you can recalculate the laptimes by adding up the splits. You can do it manually but it has always taken me longer than the time to the next heat.
