It very much depends on the type of tyre you're using but the Vega SL slicks that you use in the Rotax classes go 'off' well before the holes disappear and you'll notice that in your lap times. Harder compounds such as the Maxxis they use in TKM can endure many more heat cycles and would take you to the North Pole and back. At the other extreme, the soft compound Dunlop KT4 [IIRC] that we used to use in 100 International back in the 1970s and 1980s would run to the canvass... and depending on the circuit... that could be within the duration of a race.
So bottom line is... it all depends on the tyre you're using. Another thing... I wouldn't waste money on second hand tyres unless you need something under you to run an engine in... new tyres are dirt cheap these days.
