I have taken this info from the Arai web site. It gives the guidelines for helmet weights. 1100 grams for the smaller sizes would take 1/2 a kilo off my lads head and neck compared to his current Bell RS3. Quite a bit of mass in a shunt!

Hope the info helps other parents out.

The CIK-FIA, the “Commison Internationale de Karting” authority of the FIA, has updated their regulations with the recommendation that all drivers under-15 should use a Snell-FIA CMH 2007 approved helmet, and that this will be made mandatory starting on the first of January 2010. For young drivers under 18 a CMH approved helmet is not mandatory, but recommended. The use of a SA or K approved helmet is otherwise mandatory.

The Snell-FIA CMH 2007 (Children’s Motorsport Helmet) approval was developed to provide a suitable helmet for children to use in motorsports, rather than a helmet designed for the adult head (and neck) and shrunk down to kid sizes. The geometry of children’s heads is different so a simple scaled-down model isn’t sufficient. The standard only accepts helmets for head circumferences under 60cm, so children with a larger head should still go for the SA and K standards. The CMH standard sets different maximum weight limits depending on the helmet size, with 1300 grams being the maximum weight for a full-face shielded helmet size 57 to 59 cm and 1100 grams the maximum weight for a full-face shielded helmet size <49 to 49 cm.

Of course Arai as the leading premium helmet brand has developed a specific CMH model, the completely new CK-6 that has been officially Snell-FIA CMR2007 approved by Snell.

More good news: the new CK-6 will be available in time for the new (karting) season. Young drivers can therefore be assured of an original Arai CMH approved helmet with all the features unique to the brand
