Without grease the bearings will chatter at high speed and cause INCREASED friction and increased wear. Getting the bearings to spin freely at the low speeds experienced by spinning by hand is a complete false economy; both monetary and performance wise.

Spend Ł8 on a pair of new rear axle bearings instead.
