The grease the bearing manufacturers put in is for longevity of life not performance. This is certainly noticable in Cadets. The grease causes the bearing to have an in built resistance. In cadets we used to take the dust shield off, clean out all the grease and lube with WD40/light machine oil between each heat, even cleaning out with brake cleaner between heats or removing bearing and soaking in petrol between meetings.
I noticed this when we moved into Minimax, the rear axle didn't run very free like we had in Cadets. I havn't removed the covers but have worked at cleaning some of the grease away over the weeks and now our axle runs smoother. Maybe co-incidence as we are learning the new class as well, but our lap times have come down since cleaning away some of the grease.
