Speedway is actually not doing that well these days, although it's still possible for the top riders to make a living from it. However, it's probably one of the few sports where the majority of competitors receive some sort of compensation for taking part.

That said, speedway was created as a spectator sport from the very beginning, generally takes place in more spectator friendly venues, and really only involves a handful of riders (there are probably fewer than 300 in the UK).
