All the major pieces are numbered, but to find those out you need to dismantle the engine.

For example I know that when Ron rebuilds my Blue he notes down the number of the conrod / piston assembly, barrel number etc.

Essentially you can use the number on the front leg and ring up Ron to find out what is known about the engine.

The reason for knowing is that if the engine has been used for non-MSA racing you might have to look carefully at the bits to make sure you have 'legal' parts in there. People have been known to modify things in an attempt to go faster if it's Non-MSA.

It's no more difficult that the problem of knowing whether a TKM or Rotax has been nodified in ways it shouldn't.

Also, as has been said, check the power box (the black box with a red and green button on it) it should be at least a type 5A. Some one recently bought one with a type 5 box and had to shell out another Ł150 or so for the type 5A.
