I agree with you view on the quality helmet v the cheapie tupperware lid but you seem to have missed a couple of major points. 1. It is illegal to use a non approved helmet on the road, hence you are liable for prosecution.
2. I can think of nothing more dangerous than riding a motorcycle wearing an Arai GP/SK5 given the field of view available from this type of helmet.
Having ridden bikes and raced cars & karts for many years I can honestly say that I have never ridden on the road with my race helmets either Bell or Arai (not owned a Simpson) as it is virtually impossible to see forward, unless you are riding a cruiser Harley or Goldwing as your head must be tilted uncomfortably back to see the road just ahead let alone the safe distance you need to see forwards add to this the peripheral vision restriction that stops you seeing the idiot trying to kill you via a side attack!
My lat bike was a Kawasaki ZXR and I used an Arai Signet on this one even that was marginal for comfortable forward vision. A GP5 probably would have only let me see as far forward as the speedo!
Now we have all had our say and wasted our time the answer to the original question is sill NO IT IS NOT LEGAL.
Just for the record there is an Arai GP5X which IS LEGAL for road use and has a much larger window but this one does NOT have the required approvals for racing.
