I used to insist my daughter wore a neck brace believing them to be better than not wearing one.
Then someone (on here I think) directed me to a report that Sid Watkins had produced for the FIA which stated that there was no evidence that they were of use and gave a few examples of them causing worse injuries than if one had not been worn.
Its a difficult issue to gauge, but there is no-one in the motorsport world who is more influential than Sid Watkins, but I have seen rear impact accidents where I am convinced the neck brace prevented the head from going down a driver's back, thereby reducing the effects of whiplash.
A HANS device is of no use whatsoever on a kart as it only works in conjunction with a seat belt. They are a major factor in preventing injury when used with belts and as part of a safety cell. The are mandatory in Saxmax which my daughter now races in, and I think also in Junior Ginetta.
There is a device called something like "Leatt Brace", which I have seen being used by karters, which I think was designed originally for moto-cross. I think they are imported by Rush Racing, but have no experience of them.
