My 2p Iame's have a narrower performance differencial than comer or Honda, so an average iame will be closer to a top iame, than either a Honda or Comer in the same comparison.
All 2 strokes are very fickle to the carb and carb settings. Even the best engine can be crippled by a poor carb of poor carb settings. So if buying an engine with "pedigree" buy it will all ancillaries, that it's performances were done using.
Apparently the hone is crucial on the iame, not just matching piston size but the angle roughness of the cross-hatching. One top team ditched their engine builder because they felt he couldn't achive this!
Finally, build a relationship with your engine builder, don't chop and change. Building a good engine is about knowledge, patience, and spending time. If you mean something, other than paying the bill, to the person doing your engine, it might just be the difference between saying "that will do" when they trial fit a piston OR them trying another to see if they can achive a slightly better ring gap or other clearance!
