I watched Lewis take his second world title on Sunday then said to my wife I genuinely wish I could share the elation most of the nation felt. I struggle myself sometimes to understand why.

I have huge respect for Lewis as a driver. I believe he is the most naturally talented racer out there and if I had to pick any driver to save my life by winning a race it would be Lewis.

Anthony Hamilton was hugely professional in managing Lewis's early career and promoting the idea of the Stevenage council house boy who took on the world and won.

I do not doubt that both Anthony and Lewis worked extremely hard and Lewis had a prodigious talent but along the way he probably had more support than any other British karter; first from Zip and later from Mclaren.

His career was carefully managed, with Lewis choosing to go down the Yamaha route rather than go into the fiercely competitive Junior TKM class.

Lewis was after that was effectively put on a fast track to Formula 1 and given the support to get there. When he did arrive he was shoehorned into one of the best teams on the grid.

All this would count for nothing if Lewis had not had the ability and drive to convert these opportunities into success. He is a winner.

The problem for me I suppose is that whenever I hear what the council house boy from Stevenage achieved against the odds i think of the other great karters who never quite made it. For me Anthony Davidson was in another class. I remebmber at Fulbeck watching him go from the back of a Super 1 grid to the front in 3 laps. As a test driver for BAR he was always near the top of the time sheets in Friday testing but never had the backing he needed for a top flight drive. The one chance he had of a points finish was scuppered by some animal committing hari kari in front of his kart.

Lewis if not the best F1 driver would be in anybody's top three. He deserves to be. But like many people I cannot take him into my heart and love him the way we do Jenson.

Every race Lewis wins is always the one that means most to him. Every race he loses is one that makes him stronger. I just don't buy into the Lewis PR image perpetuated from his karting roots and that is maybe why I had wanted Nico to win on Sunday.
