My son is 12, racing in Honda Cadets and currently 108kg on the scales. All his mates are in Honda's, are lighter than he is and will be staying there for another year. For him the friendships are as important as the racing. He also still has more to learn about racing technique. With the right kart I can get him down to 105kg and with a little effort could shave another kg off his body weight which would get us to 104kg. If has is being predicted the min weight for Honda's goes up to 106kg this would mean we are 2kg shy of the min weight.
Of course he will continue to grow but at what weight is anyone's guess. So I'm trying to decide whether to stay on in Honda's or move up.
Staying in Honda FOR 1. Stays with his mates which means a lot to him. He doesn't make friends easily and so sticking with those he know is important 2. He gets another year refining his technique without the speed and grip of a new class 'muddying the waters' and being the focus. 3. I save money I would otherwise need to invest in a new trailer (big enough to take a Junior Kart)
AGAINST 1. £1500 invested in a lightweight kart (one I've sold the current one) when he could outgrow it before next year is up (weight or height). Would I be better off putting that money in to a Junior Kart ? 2. We would get a head start on his mates in the next class up.
What haven't I considered ? Any thoughts/advise on what to do is welcome.
tx in advance
