The fiche states no machining other than to the cylinder head is allowed. The moment the piston is machined it is no longer within fiche. Any established TKM builder that modifies pistons or ports knows they are cheating. If James asks Harry to tune his engine he needs to present Harry with a copy of the fiche so that he can do the tuning work within the rules set out in the fiche. It's here:

The rules aren't rubbish. They allow a few of us to rebuild our own engines at home without access to particularly sophisticated equipment or tools, happy in the knowledge that when we get checked over by the scrutineers they will be able to see we haven't cheated.
Of my two engines, one is quite a bit better than the other, in my kart, with my gearing and setup. Might be different for another driver, different power characteristics suit different drivers. I'm pretty sure with a little care and attention I'll get them performing much the same as each other without breaking any rules. Harry and James are cheating in your scenario, I'm not going to.
