Many of us have argued long and hard about whether the 'stiffness' of the axle makes the slightest difference whatsoever. The idea that they are made of different grades of steel and it's that which makes the difference is laughable because of the fractional REAL difference in stiffness between all types of steel.
The axle wall thickness MAY make a difference..... but that may be because of the different weights.
Personally, I suspect it makes minor to microscopic differences but that is by no-means the 'standard' view.
The problem will be that, if you ask.... 'what difference does X make?', you will (probably) get wildly differing answers. That is one of my reasons for believing it's HYPE. If there WAS an honest difference, most of the reports for the effect of a 'stiff' axle over a 'soft' one would be the same..... they are NOT!
The only real way to test this is, like everything else, TEST it for yourself.
However, I always argue that you should spend your money where you get the most 'change' for your money. That would naturally place 'stiff/soft' axles WAY down my list. Unless you have wrung EVERYTHING out of tyre pressures, tyre age, tyre temperature and PRACTICE then you will be wasting your money on messing about with axles.
Please note..... this is JUST my opinion and that AIN'T gospel!
