1) Staggered start? I used a generic word for what you described as a 'single file start'. Oh god..... don't you think WE had EXACTLY the same marshals telling US to slow down on the rolling laps? We've been doing that since the 1960s..... it's not changed one FRACTION. On the rolling lap.... if the pole man creeps ahead of the others... and/or drops back slightly....what happens? Are you trying to claim that IF the marshals wanted the rolling lap at (let's guess) 20mph.... that if Poleman dropped his speed to 18mph, that all the rest would surge past him.....? You are simply kidding! Like it or not, poleman controls the pace..... just like in an F1 re-start! The only difference is that we do it in parallel formation.... f1 does it in the same formation but in single file! Also, the F1 poleman decides WHEN and WHERE to go to full power.
2) Yes, David, accidents occur in Rolling Starts..... just as they do in Standing Starts, making coffee, ironing you shirts and tiddly-winks! We were NOT asking if accidents occur during rolling starts but if standing starts caused LESS accidents. When you have the evidence for that, present it! That was naughty word play!
3) Errrr.... how is that NOT a good argument? My point was that, currently, there is almost no benefit to making the clutch operate at its optimum pick up from standing. With it included in the race, there WILL be an advantage to 'tuning'. The ideal would be for the clutch to operate in such as way that it allows the transfer of 100% of the torque as rapidly as possible.... which places the kart FAR closer to the stage of 'stalling' from requesting too much power too early. It will be EXACTLY like dropping the clutch before the revs on your car are high enough.... it will STALL! Damn it, David, I have DONE this stuff before, I KNOW what you do to make the clutch work better because we DID it in gearbox. And every tuning step we took made the chance of a stall, higher. We did it so we'd be nearer to getting the optimum launch. With a rolling start.... there is NO advantage to such a tuned clutch and there is NO EXPENSE in HAVING one! With SS, there WILL be an 'arms race'!
4) I still don't get what you are saying. Be clearer with your comment! What were you trying to illustrate and how?
5) Errrrr....... wow... this one has me confused... and you feel that CIK DROPPING DD is a good reason for US to introduce SS which REQUIRE clutches............? Is it only me that can't see that your point almost annihilates your argument F*O*R SS. By definition, the CIK will be effectively BANNING SS. How is that an argument F*O*R SS?
6) and 6a)....... errrrrr....... errrrrr........ WOW again.....
Let me re-ask the question..... perhaps you can express ONE view this time:-
Are standing starts a better idea than current rolling starts or would a modified rolling start be better still....? If so, which and how? Will a change make as MUCH difference to the TOTAL number of accidents than would a PROPER enforcement of the NO CONTACT rule THROUGOUT the race???
My confusion arises from the fact that for the first half of your response, you seem to disagree with me and by the end, you seem to be AGREEING with me! Don't be surprised that I am confused!
