I always set the Mychron 4 on my TKM to flash just above the desired max rpm, so I know if I need to drop a tooth for the next heat. It's good and noticeable in my peripheral vision, even though I never look at the dash when racing. I think it would work well for me as a shift light.

If you want something a bit more programmable, I have used the Omex programmable shift light in single-seat race cars where it was difficult to get the rev counter sufficiently visible. I reckon they'd work great on a kart if you attached the little light cluster to the top of the steering wheel.
