We use generally 4 crew, plus 4 to 6 static cameras for difficult or interesting angles, coverage and variety is the key, along with they way we shoot, maybe a go pro or 2 on a tyre bundle inside of an apex kerb, for ground rush, and for Club100 I've been incorporating drivers' own gopro and contour helmet cameras, so from 1-8 helmet. I've a huge fast RAID, and FinalCut7 using the multicam feature usually between 12-16 angles per race.
Not really much point talking about cameras as we don't record to tape or card in camera, except to say it's all Sony and all HD, bypassing compression to record externally to digital hard drive recorders attached to every camera, save the gopros, recording to the edit codec Apple Pro Res 100+Mbps, this speeds up the post considerably, with no transcoding.
