For most people the different rims work on the conviction effect.

That is, one believes with conviction that they will do something, and they do. Sometimes it is measurable.

Other people with less conviction find different results.

A theoretical answer is that the resistance of the driver in kilo-cynics is inversely proportional to the expected result in GBO (grammes of Bovine Ordure) multiplied by the height of the wallet in mm times the square root of the distance from the paddock shop in metres divided by the time from the last event in milli-seconds.
