Let's not get in to 'slag-the-TAG' again please. Been done many times before and it get's boring.
It's been about 10yrs since transponder timing came in, and during that time nothing much changed. There were 2 or 3 software packages for the timekeepers - all a load of garbage.
Then Vola & APEX started getting the ball rolling adding better functionality to get the race to 'run' better from a timing point of view. Elements such as live timing enhance, but don't 'make' a system.
So can you blame the clubs and their timekeepers for pushing things forward? If the timing system crapped-out or hung mid race, and your son/daughter didn't get timed properly, you'd be the first to put a complaint in - and quite rightly too.
Yes there are now various softwares that work with various transponder brands. And yes that might mean you have to hire or buy a new transponder, depending on where you race.
The clubs are trying to do the best they can by their members, so stop giving them a hard time. Remember they will have made a decision on what software/hardware package to go for based on a whole number of factors - not just the bells & whistles you may think the decision pivots around. It's a major investment for them and for you, their members.
Just think, the last time they updated their timing system could have been 10yrs ago.... so it's not like they're at it every year or two.
