I started Karting with my Son 5 yrs ago when he was 9 and I was 50 something as I wanted to do something that enabled us to spend quality time together and that would enable him to grow from the shy and intreverted child that he was. We stated by doing a year of coporate club racing and then moved on to owner driver racing in Honda Cadets as a dad and lad team but I quickly realised that I didn't have the skills needed to progress and so did my son ! We joined a team and neither of us has looked back since. The benefits for my Son have been great, he has grown in to a confident, respectful and well mannered 14yr old with a group of similar karting friends, and I have become a reasonably competant mechanic. Mixing within the team and being told by the team manager that on occasion he had driven really well gave him self belief (my comments were never as valid) and coupled with good set up advice we progressed to regular podiums and wins.We race two club meetings every month and I have always done the spannering to keep the costs down ( a bit anyway ! ) Has it been Expensive ? YES. But has it been worth it ? YES. We have had a great 5 yrs of ups and downs but what price those memories ?
