S1 costs are elevated due to having to devote3 days track time per round. To do S1 properly you need to run on the Friday as there is little or no time to get yourself sorted on Sat morning before you are up for quali 1. The extra day naturally entails an extra night stay so that naturally adds to the cost, add to this that there is only a slim chance that more than 1 round is your home / local track some travelling is involved. This year my nearest round is 3 hours away and there are 2 that are over 5 hrs. Andrew's comment about S1 drivers being top club drivers is spot on, it is also true that there are some in S1 that are there by virtue of 'wallet volume' If you have never visited aS1 round it is worth a visit, you will find the format is somewhat distant to the format of club racing.
