I think that this thread is a great example of how different people in karting go about solving similar problems in different ways.
I'm a bit of a masochist and inveterate tinkerer. I actually enjoy stripping and prepping the lad's kart. It is a great distraction from normal working life!
You just have to decide what best suits your particular interests and budget.
The one thing that everybody seems to agree on is that experience counts for everything in this game. Good drivers tend to be 'made' by learning (for both of you), practice and encouragement through both the highs and the lows.
When you start racing, remember that the other guys out there may have 2 to 3 years experience ahead of you and your lad. You will be surprised at how quickly you both learn at first - it is a very steep learning curve, but I think that it is great fun and some of the best time you can have as a family - as long as you keep everything in perspective.
Talk to the other people at the track - you will find that they are or have been in exactly the same boat as you. The majority are willing to help and are really friendly - the rest.... well, let them get on with what they are doing.
A really good driver can make an average kart/engine look good. With an inexperienced or poor driver, no matter how much you spend on gear, they will not consistently do well or be super fast (unless you use a dodgy engine - but that is another story..!)
Above all, enjoy it ! Best of luck.
PS I love the 'team ebay' mentality - most of our gear has been sourced from there !!
