I have always done my adjustment as follows.

line up with a known straight edge, i.e steel ruler, piece of flat bar, key steel etc.

lie under kart or crouch or sit looking up at the rear sprocket and chain

Spin rear axle assembly and look at the gap between the outer edge of the teeth inner edge of the chain links on both sides.

If there is a gap on one side but not the other whilst spinning the axle assembly then adjust the carrier to allow equal gap on each side. (if its a dd engine take plug out and earth to prevent coil damage)

I have done this for years and never suffered with chewing sprockets up and wearing chains out. I dont know what the lasers are like but the last one i saw was a clip on plastic job and was quite frankly a waste of space.
