You are correct, he needs a lot of seat time and his times tumble for every session. However, I want to learn as much as possible about karts as I drive a Rotax myself and will transfer as much knowledge as possible to him and his kart when he is ready.
During the race this weekend I noticed that he had oversteer in various phases of the corner, and no understeer. He confirmed that the front never slid and that the rear did, without being able to tell me when this happens. Parts of the solution is driving technique, the other part is setup. I moved the rear hubs outwards by 15mm and noticed during the next session that he had less oversteer, and in fact appeared to have a fairly neutral kart which will boost confidence and thus speed. I had prior to the race narrowed his front track a bit to avoid having the rear come around so quickly.
The irony in this message thread that I started is that I have realized he is yet too slow to get any inner rear wheel lift/skid, and thus needs the kart set up differently than the fastest drivers.
