I don't believe its any more expensive to be competitive. Its all perception. People see the big trucks and new tyres every practice session and get frightened by the expense when in reality it makes very little difference to the pace in the racing part of the event when everyone has to have new tyres anyway.
Most of being competitive in karting is a mindset and that's free. The biggest problem with karting is every driver and his dad telling you that it is because they have this they have that or they're cheating. Sorry but it mainly comes down to not being very good at karting, 95% of drivers think they are next ayrton senna and 0.00000001% actually are.
