Tripe....

Merc have applied the rule TO THE LETTER and have found a way that was NOT anticipated by the rule makers. Next year, that loophole will be CLOSED! There's NO interpretation of the rule, it's just being applied RIGOROUSLY... to the L*E*T*T*E*R!

I didn't claim the wording was perfect but the points you make are all silly:-

1) Look up the meaning of the word 'ambient' and you'll understand it!

2) I didn't state WHERE they should be measured and that is so they can be measured ANYWHERE on the dummy grid.

3) The term 'reasonable' has a clear LEGAL meaning and should by applied USING that meaning. It allows (for example) for warm wind to warm the tyres, even without bright sunshine.

4) The 'not leave the dummy grid' clause is to prevent drivers warming (artificially) the tyres ON the dummy grid! Without that, my wording would have allowed you to have arrived on the dummy grid with cold tyres and then apply heaters ON the dummy grid!

5) The simplest method would be to have a control tyre sitting in the open air. Any driver's tyres that were greater than (let's guess) 10% above the reference tyre would be deemed to be too hot! If those tyres are not colled before the start of the heat..... your are DQed! Reference items are a standard method of measuring 'standards'.

... and so on....

There is ZERO interpretation there. The explainations can ALSO be listed as addenda to rules. The rule is WHAT is applied and the method of applying it is contained in an addendum. In that way, EVERYBOPDY will know what's cheating and what ISN'T!

No matter HOW big-headed I am, I am NOT saying I can word the PERFECT rule in 10 seconds! However, as a group, we karters CAN manage to RE-word rules to fit the job when we use our collectiove experience. It WON'T be perfect in the first year but it will be BETTER in the second year and so on! That's GOT to be better than the J*O*K*E rule book we use today!
