I broadly agree that it is the overtaking driver's responsibility and that generally, taking some care around overtaking slower driver's should be actioned.

However, it's not always an inexperienced driver's speed that is the issue.

I was at Whilton Mill a few years back. In the leading pack, we approached a back-marker within about 6 laps coming across the start/finish line.

2 karts in front of me passed the kart towards the end of the start/finish straight up the inside and I followed through up the inside onto the first part (left) of the left / right. Right when I was committed, the driver decided to sweep right across the track (presumably in preperation to let karts up the inside for the second part of the chicane (right). The problem was, I was there! It ended up with my rear tyre clipping his front and launching me in the air. I flew straight across the grass and only touched the ground just before the tyre wall on the outside and was therefore thrown out of the kart with considerable damage.

Now I'm not blaming the slower driver, but there is a point as an overtaking driver that you are fully committed to the overtake no matter how much of a cautious approach you give it. However, if you've seen the blue flag and 2 karts have just flown passed you, it should be your responsibility (and fairly obvious), that there are other karts about to do the same... The slower driver does need to share SOME responsibility for knowing when karts are lapping them and when its safe to pull over to let them through (if thats what you want to do).

However, If the driver of that kart had not worried about the karts behind him and driven a normal line through the corner, the accident could have been avoided entirely. If you're a novice, just drive your normal line at you normal pace, the quicker driver will find a safe way through.
