This may be where your confusion is coming from. Loosely speaking, less teeth equals more speed at the end of the straight. More teeth equals faster acceleration off the corners. By adding two teeth when changing the seat, you're automatically giving your son better acceleration off the corners so he's going to say it "releases" better.

Things get a bit more complicated in Rotax because the powerband has two or three dips in it. Sometimes, adding a tooth or two will allow you to pull all the way through the final dip into the last bit of powerband giving greater top speed and accelleration.
