A crowd of 5000 people enjoying watching competitive karting isn't of interest to karters? I would have thought those who already enjoy the sport would be delighted to see such a huge event promoting it.

No min weight and no lead added. Considering the 2000 entrants, and the qualification system, there wasn't really any need. The drivers were all similar weight but it certainly wasn't the lightest who won the races.
