The aim of most wet tyre treads is to clear the water, in the event of a drying track you help "speed up" the overheating of the tyres therefore losing grip faster.

If you run the tyres backwards instead of clearing the water it IS pulled/pushed to the centre of thre tyre and cools the tread therefore allowing the tyre to maintain its operating temperature and not "fall apart" as quick therefore work for longer.
