At the last race meeting my son cross-threaded the visor fixing and the threaded insert it screws to has worked loose. I tried to get a pair of long nosed pliers behind the visor to hold the insert but all I’ve managed to do is round off the bolt head to the point where I’m going to have to drill it out. In hindsight I think the pliers were actually gripping the bolt rather than the insert – hence me being unable to separate them. So now I somehow need to either drill out the bolt whilst getting a grip on the insert – which is freely spinning but won’t come out of the lid, or I force something between the visor and the lid to try and get the insert to pop out from the helmet shell – something I’m not keen to do in case I damage it beyond all repair. I can’t see any way of getting access to the insert from inside the lid – lifting up the padding revealed the polystyrene core but I assume that is bonded into the shell. If I did manage to pop out the insert can new ones be bought and glued back in place? I really don’t want to spend £300+ on a new lid. It’s a Bell KC-3 lid by the way. Any advice??
