Let's take your example: The Watch.
I wasn't aware that 'watch wearing' was part of a sport or was a competition of its own. I thought it was a sign of vanity and hubris.
Actually, if you think hard about it, you'll notice what it REALLY is.... it's a statement, (identical to all statements in fashion) which is designed to say a SINGLE thing....
"I have SO much money (more maney than YOU, being the important point!) that I can make extravagant, useless and wasteful purchases... look how much I can THROW away on a fripperies....."
Anyway.... I digress....
However, I was aware that the helmet is part of the SAFETY features required in motorracing. To the best of my knowledge, unlike in Show Jumping, there are few awards for looking the PRETTIEST. I was aware that the V*A*S*T majority of prizes/awards go to those who go round the track the fastest. It therefore seems to me that spending any silly sum on LOOKING quick when you still are 'short' of money for GOING quick would seem... how to put thids politely? ... err... counter productive!
Having said that, it's YOUR money and you may spend it on what you want!
The point of my reply was to show OTHERS that, perhaps, they might like to concentrate on spending money on what makes them QUICKER... not prettier!
I am also aware that I am a voice in the wilderness.... when it became a 'fashion statement' to wear over-priced-plimsoles.... I became fully aware that I have LOST and the imbeciles have won: the insane ARE running the asylum!
