As if to prove my point!!! (see my post about FAQs below!)

The best advice would be to find your nearest kart track and go down there on a race weekend (phone up to find what club race there and on what weekend). Then talk to as many people as you can. Most are a friendly bunch and will welcome a newcomer. Best go on a Saturday when there is a bit less pressure on the drivers and their mechanics/dads. They'll have a bit more time for you.

For a boy your sons age you will be looking at one of the cadet classes, which personally I know nothing about.
Type "how to start karting" into google and you'll find a number of useful sites.
Good luck. It is all very daunting at first but stick at it and it will soon become one of the most enjoyable things in your life.
