HC64, it depends on the material the helmet is made of - you can't (usually) paint polycarbonate helmets but you can paint fibreglass and the composites BUT, I would always check with the manufacturers first - especially if it's an expensive helmet. I painted both my son's helmets with good old cellulose paints. While we are on the subject, have you thought about using an air brush instead of spray cans? Those cans aren't cheap and don't last long either. You can literally almost pay what you want for an airbrush and at the bottom end of the market they are dirt cheap but give you more control and a much better finish. You can get your paint from your local car paint stockist, mine will do the paint in 1/4 litre tins at about £8 a time and when you add thinners too, it does go a long way. Some paints are hideously expensive though (such as Mr. Button's flourescent yellow!)so just beware when you embark on doing a replica...
